Past Projects
Friends of Gyle Park have been involved in numerous projects to improve the park. See further details below.

Wildflower Meadow Management
In 2023 City of Edinburgh Council changed the Wildflower Meadow in the park to a perennial meadow.
Perennial meadows generally take longer than annual wildflower meadows to establish. So, you might not have seen quite as much colour in the meadow as in previous years.
Once they do flower however, they generally grow back every year.

The Gyle Park Meadow now has long-lived perennials in it which grow back from their roots.

Friends of Gyle Park Volunteers, along with The Conservation Volunteers, have been working to maintain and improve the perennial meadow.
We have bought native wildlife plants and dug them in.
We have learned how to scythe some of the plants down to create space and light in the meadow for new seeds to set down, whilst keeping some planting to provide habitat for overwintering wildlife.

If the meadow is not cut back coarse grasses, thistles and docks will dominate the meadow. So, we will continue our work in future years to reduce these in order to allow the new plants and flowers to establish and grow to provide lots of wildlife friendly blooms and more colour in the park.
